Rigging
The links & information on this page relate to the methods and equipment used to access building envelopes in order to complete commercial building restorations projects. It also includes sources for access equipment of many kinds and links to sites on rigging safety including sources within OSHA, the government agency that oversees work place safety in the United States.

Knots
The rigger on a commercial building restorations project only needs a few knots in his repertoire. Technically a “knot” is a stop in a line, also called a “knob”, so the rigger only needs to be able to tie one or two of those. He should, however, know at least one “loop”, a “bend” (affixing the ends of two lines to each other) or two and a couple of “hitches” (tying a line to a post or rail). This page has instructions on those and links to more.

Tie-back to Non Dedicated Structures
Roof anchors installed for the purpose of securing suspended scaffolds do not exist on many recently constructed buildings and they are nearly nonexistent on buildings built before1990. OSHA regulations for securing life lines and tie-backs take this fact into account. This page is about that, and is of value to building owners who may be concerned about how and if contractors are in compliance.
Scaffold
Scaffold and Access Industry Association (SAIA) Training
Formed in 1972 the SAIA is an association dedicated to access industry safety, training and education.
Scaffold Types
This OSHA Office of Training and Education office document from 1996 includes illustrations of many kinds of scaffolds used in numerous trades. Isometric and multi-view representations of these varied means of access are identified in accordance with the nomenclature used by the tradesmen who would have erected them. None of the figures necessarily represent an assembly that OSHA would approve but they are all configurations that journeymen would have worked from in the past and considered standard configurations.
Single Point Adjustable Scaffold / Bosun’s Chair Operating Guide – OSHA
This “eTool” is OSHA’s guide for setting up and operating single point adjustable suspended work platforms. Bosun chairs are in this category.
Supported Scaffolds – OSHA eTool
Supported scaffolds consist of one or more platforms supported by outrigger beams, brackets, poles, legs, uprights, posts, frames, or similar rigid support. Because frame scaffolds are the most common type of supported scaffold, this eTool uses the Frame module to describe requirements that are common to all supported scaffolds. Requirements specific to the other types are described only in their respective modules.
Swing Stage Scaffold Operating Guide – OSHA
This “eTool” is OSHA’s comprehensive guide for setting up and operating swing stage scaffolds.
