Polyaspartic Coatings
Polyaspartic coatings are a category of polyurea. They are actually polyaspartic aliphatic polyurea which can be clear or pigmented and can include quartz, vinyl paint chips and other materials as broadcast media. Metallic pigments can also be incorporated in the coating.
Polyaspartic resins are highly abrasion resistant, chemically resistant and quickly installed with higher overall performance than other coatings. Polyaspartics are compliant with VOC regulations and the 100% solids version has little or no odor and no solvents. Polyaspartic floor coating systems have been used on notable construction projects like the parade ground of the Pentagon in Washington D.C, Coors Field baseball stadium in Denver, CO. Rockefeller Center, New York, Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, TX, and Aquarium Zoo in Istanbul, Turkey. The material is also used to line truck beds, on rail cars, bridges, wood floors and light poles.

Two Part Polyaspartic Coatings Protect Virginia Steel Bridges for Over A Decade
Since the 1970s zinc rich primers in three coat systems have been the state of the art for coatings on bridges and marine structures. Until the 1990s when the allowable VOC emissions was decreased vinyl based intermediate and topcoats were used over the zinc primer. When the VOC regulations were imposed three-coat systems consisting of a zinc-rich primer / high-build intermediate (epoxy or high-build urethane) / light-stable, moisture cure polyurethane topcoat were introduced. In the 1990s, advancements in binder technology allowed for the use of high-build, two-coat polyaspartic urethane (PAS) coating systems. This article documents a study conducted by the Virginia State Department of Transportation on mutlple bridge projects completed in 2005 that concluded the two coat PAS systems are generally equal to the three coat urethanes.
